Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

re health logo

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD) IS A NEURODEVELOPMENTAL CONDITION THAT AFFECTS SOCIAL COMMUNICATION, BEHAVIOUR, AND SENSORY PROCESSING.

The term "spectrum" reflects the wide variation in abilities and challenges experienced by individuals with ASD, ranging from highly independent to requiring significant support in daily life.

ASD affects approximately 1 in 100 people worldwide, with symptoms typically appearing in early childhood. Although the exact causes are not fully understood, genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors are believed to contribute. Our approach focuses on addressing the underlying imbalances that may exacerbate symptoms, helping individuals achieve their full potential.

Symptoms

DIFFICULTIES WITH SOCIAL INTERACTION AND COMMUNICATION

REPETITIVE BEHAVIOURS OR RESTRICTED INTERESTS

SENSORY SENSITIVITIES (E.G., HYPERSENSITIVITY TO SOUNDS, TEXTURES, OR LIGHT)

CHALLENGES WITH TRANSITIONS OR CHANGES IN ROUTINE

GASTROINTESTINAL ISSUES, SUCH AS CONSTIPATION, DIARRHOEA, OR FOOD SENSITIVITIES

CO-OCCURRING CONDITIONS, INCLUDING ADHD, ANXIETY, OR SLEEP DISTURBANCES

The conventional approach

Conventional approaches to managing ASD often involve behavioural therapies, speech and occupational therapies, and, in some cases, medications to manage specific symptoms such as hyperactivity, anxiety, or irritability. While these interventions can provide valuable support, they may not address underlying biochemical, nutritional, or environmental factors that influence symptoms.

Our approach

We adopt a root-cause, integrative approach to supporting individuals with ASD. Recognising the complex interplay between genetics, gut health, nutrient status, and environmental exposures, our care focuses on improving overall health and reducing factors that may contribute to symptom intensity. Key elements of our approach include:

GENETIC INSIGHTS

Utilising genetic testing to identify variations that may affect neurotransmitter pathways, detoxification, or nutrient utilisation.

SUPPORTING MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION

Enhancing energy production at the cellular level to improve brain function and physical energy

OXIDATIVE STRESS

Supporting the body’s ability to manage inflammation and oxidative stress, which are often elevated in ASD

SUPPORTING GUT BRAIN AXIS

Investigating and addressing gut health issues, including dysbiosis, inflammation, and food sensitivities, which are common in individuals with ASD.

ADDRESSING CO-OCCURING CONDITIONS

Supporting conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, or sleep disturbances with personalised interventions

DIETARY APPROACHES

Exploring approaches such as gluten-free, casein-free (GFCF) diets, low-glutamate diets, or other tailored plans to support biochemical balance and reduce symptoms.

PERSONALISED NUTRITION

Identifying and addressing nutrient deficiencies, such as zinc, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins, which play critical roles in brain development and function

By combining these strategies, we aim to complement conventional treatments and empower individuals to take control of their mental health with a holistic, sustainable approach.
